15th Annual Milton Lecture
The Friends of Milton’s Cottage are delighted to invite you to this year’s Annual Milton Lecture, with guest lecturer Professor Nicholas McDowell, of the University of Exeter, who will explore Milton’s relevance for the information age.
As well as being a great poet, Milton was a prose writer of distinction, and the questions he raised on social, political and press freedoms, in pamphlets such as Areopagitica, feel more urgent than ever. Lessons in Free Speech from will be delivered as a hybrid lecture from the atmospheric Mercers’ Hall – home to one of the world’s oldest livery company – where the in-person ticket price includes drinks and canapes after the lecture.
Tickets cost £30 in-person (£10 for students) and £10 via Zoom (£5 for students) with all proceeds supporting Milton’s Cottage – Milton’s only surviving residence, and the place where he completed his epic masterpiece Paradise Lost. Please note that booking is essential, via the link below, and those wishing to attend in person must book by 9 February at the latest.
